An organization is never more at risk than when it outsources work without validation and it is therefore essential the organization has all the necessary checks and balances in place to ensure this process is well managed.

Contractors must be informed, assessed and monitored in a variety of ways to ensure their performance does not have a costly negative impact on the organization’s business. It is vital the actual performance of a contractor matches their stated intentions otherwise the statements and documents provided within any completed tender are meaningless leaving the organization and its reputation at risk.

This training course will develop your ability to critically assess your contractors at all stages of a project to ensure you receive maximum performance with minimum risk.

This training is designed to identify and describe the activities associated with the management of contractor HSE within the formal framework of a contract, both prior to and after award. It is targeted at Contract Holders and personnel tasked with planning HSE in contracts, with tender preparation, evaluation and subsequent contractor management.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this training course, the participants will learn how to:

  • Prepare projects and select contractors
  • Define client/contractor agreements and documentation
  • Produce client/contractor HSE project plans
  • Supervise contractors’ operations on day-to-day basis

Modern day thinking on risk management puts heavy emphasis on the use of defences or barriers to prevent losses attributed to organizational disturbances.  Failure of these barriers leads to unwanted incidents.

Barrier management is therefore an important facet of risk management. The Bowtie technique is ideally suited for this purpose, allowing detailed analysis of prevention and mitigation measures – in other words, the barriers – for specific hazards and their ultimate consequences.   Effective barrier management involves linking the barriers on the Bowties to specific elements of the management system such as HSE-critical activities/tasks and their accountabilities/responsibilities, standards, policies and remedial actions to address any shortfalls.

The Bowtie technique uses a visual format, thus facilitating risk communication. It is currently widely used in such diverse sectors as oil and gas, chemical process, power generation, mining, aviation/aerospace, healthcare, manufacturing, IT security, finance and government.

This 2 days course is aimed at risk management professionals and practitioners. In this Digital Classroom, the delegates will highlighted with the key principles of the Hazards and Effects Management Process (HEMP) and how the Bowtie technique can augment risk management in their organizations, at the same time facilitating effective risk communication.  Participants will be required to undertake a number of worked exercises in order to gain practical experience with the use of Bowties.
